Mindfulness In an Age of Distraction

Let go of your worries

and be completely clear-hearted like the face of a mirror

that contains no images…

Mv. Jalaluddin Rumi

The following is a transcript from our talk at Hope for Exceptional Needs in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Hope is the leading bilingual centre in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, founded by Dr. Uzma Raheem, which promotes the education, awareness, and success of all families with children who have Special Needs of every kind.

In an age of distraction  we aim to regain an understanding on a subject which intrigues our imagination, in theory appears to be new age wishful thinking and in reality a lost way of life.

What is Mindfulness?

According to Mindfulness expert  Jon Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment and nonjudgmentally.”

Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment and nonjudgmentally.”

Overview

When man has full awareness of his thoughts, is able to pay attention to them, without judgement, and keeps his consciousness in the now, in the present, in the moment, in the very second of right here, right now and not be distracted with the inner pendulum which swings between past and present over and over, he is in a state of mindfulness.

In a practical, no nonsense understanding of mindfulness, let us go over a few relatable instances which the majority of us face on a day to day basis.

Relationship disputes

miscommunication

misunderstanding

chaotic living

noise pollution

lack of focus

lack of stillness

insomnia

depression

negative thinking

stagnant lifestyle

sporadic zoning out

Believe it or not, the lack of mindfulness in our lives has become the number one if not the culprit of the aforementioned issues we face which cause us anything but a peace of mind.

On the other hand, when mindfulness becomes our way of life, we open ourselves to immeasurable levels of peace, joy, contentment, love, stability, order, focus and great achievements.

Origins of Mindfulness

Mindfulness is perceived to be a heavenly gift to man. Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and the majority all spiritual traditions have emphasized the concept of flow, being present and practicing mindfulness as a core discipline. Traditionally, seekers and adherents were taught the fundamentals of concentration, meditation, stillness, breath work and emptying the mind. All these disciplines lead to the state of being PRESENT.

Numerous teachings on the practical implementation of mindfulness may be found and learnt through living teachers, guides, books, self development programs, and age old traditions ranging from Tai Chi, Yoga, Chi Gong and a variety of other forms. One of the most commonly advocated practice is through breath work; focusing on one’s breath. This practice channels the distracted ‘Monkey Mind’ from past drama of the Why’s and the future illusion of the what if’s by bringing one’s attention to breath, its subtle sound, grounding our focus in the now.

Now to life, now to the moment, now to action creates reaction and keeps one aloof from the abyss of the deadly twins; past and future.

When man occupies his throughs in the past of future, he begins the process of storytelling, creating tall tales, fables and his interpretation of events which are only throughs and not necessarily reality. Excessive dwelling on either past or future keeps us from action. Essentially our actions  result from thought and emotion. This mental occupation of constant thought distraction fails to produce focus, concentration and significant action which are key ingredients to change.

Evidence of the Lack of Mindfulness in our Everyday Life

scattered shoes

a messy bed

open toothpaste tube

dirty dishes

disheveled appearance

un flushed toilet

scattered clothing

forgetfulness in prayer

interrupted conversations

inability to focus on what the other person is saying

loss of personal belongings

a disorganized purse where keys cannot be located

burnt meals

car lights left on

tap left running

front door left ajar

loved ones constantly saying, “you are not listening to me!”

Insomnia

Dwelling on the past

Dwelling  thoughts on the future

and the list goes on

These are some of the proofs we can find as evidence in our very environment as to where we are in our thoughts. These proofs are great clues which serve as self check reminders of what is happening internally. The interesting thing here is that it would take mindfulness to detect our own lack of. Mindfulness is not constant, it requires discipline, practice and conscious effort. Coming out of mindfulness, entering into unmindfulness and being able to decipher between the two states requires a watchful mind.

On the other hand, had we  practiced mindfulness, then perhaps we would notice shoes placed in their designated area.

Perhaps, upon awakening we would make our beds first rather than rushing into the next, next and next.

Perhaps after brushing, our kids would place the toothpaste lid back on the tube rather than zoning out taking imaginary selfies in the mirror with the tap running 50 miles an hour.

Perhaps we would eat together as a family instead of cubicle eating where every member is occupied in watching something in different rooms.

Perhaps we would eat together without the tv on and not silence ourselves like monks of a secret mystical order who utter not.

Perhaps we would offer to clear the table and put our dishes away instead of conveniently leaving it for Molly Maid or Mommy Maid.

Perhaps we would focus more on aesthetics, physical, emotional and spiritual well being and not lose ourselves to a point where we now seek help for a quick fix, a quack, or 911 tummy tuck.

Perhaps our desks would represent mental order instead of paper clutter which hinders our productivity.

Perhaps if weren’t busy on social media , our burnt dinner would of been saved.

Perhaps if the car lights or AC were shut, the car battery would not magically run down.

And perhaps life would be kinder if mom cooled off on her social networks, and actually paid attention to her child who says, ‘mom I just failed math’, or ‘mom I need help understanding past or future tense in English’ or ‘mom a boy in school is bullying me’,  yet her thoughts preoccupied her mind to a point where she responds with the classical hmm, that’s great, yeah, nice.’ ‘See mommy, you never heard a word I said did you?’ Mom is clueless, speechless and somewhat embarrassed as all she can think about is inability to recall what her child expressed only a few moments ago.

The Technology Agenda

Technology and busy life styles, rat race syndrome, societal expectations of how we are expected to live, behave, dress, act, think has robbed our inherent right to being in the now. Constant stimulation and ADD, ADHD  in adults is on the rise as much as it is in children.

Everyday technology toxins such as, gadgets, TV/Net, noise stimulation, noise pollution, information overload, video games and social media have divorced us from the ancient art of silence, an innate love for nature, meditation, focused thinking, thinking, visualization, human company, reading books and the simple pleasures of life like enjoying the scenic view on a road trip.

Conspiracy or Lunacy-  You Choose

When masses are kept busy in everything but the act of conscious thinking, then injecting information to minds which  have been conditioned to remain off guard, becomes an easy task. Mind control, subliminal programming, subjugation, suggestive ideas, imparting ideologies, influencing lifestyle choices, consumerism, infusing propaganda are media tools utilized through intelligence agencies whose agenda is more than we could possibly grasp. Let us simply ask ourselves, are we mind control candidates?

Who is Easier to Control?

When man is conditioned to be dumbed down, he lacks the ability to tap into his creative intelligence. Creative intelligence connects us through the means of our subconscious mind to infinite intelligence or Universal Mind. The exact opposite; synthetic intelligence, is what most of us use in our day to day life as it requires the use of the conscious mind which collects data from our five senses.  Is it an irony that enlightened masters, artists, poets, thinkers, philosophers, geniuses, prodigies, operate from creative intelligence? Worth mentioning, creative individuals are harder to exercise control over in comparison to individuals who solely rely on synthetic intelligence.

Practical Mindfulness Pointers

  • Slow down and know that you are perfectly fine where you are now in this moment

Research  on Mindfulness

  • 72% of GPs think it would be helpful for their patients with mental health problems to learn Mindfulness meditation skills (21% don’t know if it would be helpful; 7% say it would not be helpful);
  • 66% of GPs say they would support a public information campaign to promote the potential health benefits of Mindfulness meditation; and
  • 64% of GPs think it would be helpful for them to receive training in Mindfulness skills themselves.

Conclusion

Life is a blessing and to live in the now is to live today as if it was our last day. Express love to those you appreciate in your life, pay attention, say sorry, take up a sport, play with your kids, spend quality time with parents and loved ones, take photos, cherish moments, practice gratitude with what life brings us. Mothers and caregivers of special needs children, know that in your home lives an angel, a spiritual guide, a lantern, a beacon who was sent from above to help you become an evolved human being who transcends the barriers of  conditional love. And finally to close off with, let us keep in mind the next time we are out on a dinner with a loved one or loved ones, to shutdown all devices and give undivided attention a priority.

Dec 17-Love Shift and Soul Attunement

Shab e Arus, Master of Love; Mevlana Jaluluddin Rumi’s night of Union  corresponds to the Gregorian date, December 17th. The lunar or Hijra date of his birth corresponds to the 6th of Rabiul Awal. The chances of both solar and lunar dates to align on one’s birth and death date are one every few decades or even centuries. Today, these two dates coincide marking the birth and ‘death’ of Jalaluddin Rumi as ONE. Traditional teachings state the passing of a saint translates to Divine Union or the “wedding night” of the beloved where soul reunites with his Lord. How magical, mystical, beautiful that today the lovers of Rumi can actually live to experience the alignment of such a date. Next year and the coming years will not be the same in terms of numerics. Hence, as per the instructions of our noble Master and guide who transmits guidance from the realm of love, today is a day of great alignment for those who seek it through the love of Mevlana Rumi.

Great avatars were sent to heal humanity and enlighten souls, penetrating hearts in a way indescribable through words. Mevlana Jalauddin Rumi reigns as the Greatest teacher of Love, the King of Love, The Heavenly Poet whose poems transcend time and space and speak to every seeker.

Rumi is for every season and for every heart

Qudra Healing, a student of the  Mevlevi Way of Mevlana Rumi was initiated into the  mystical order via a Dede; an authorized conduit of the Mevlevi Order of Rumi. He summoned her to take the pledge of allegiance in the order through Owaisi (telepathic) initiation. Feeling at home once again, Qudra explains that from childhood up till present, she can connect the dots, experiences and openings which resonate to the Shams Rumi Phenomena as she coins it.  “To say in the least, it donned upon me just a few days ago that my lunar birthday, 6th Rabiul Awal, coincides with Mevlana Rumi’s lunar birth date”says Qudra.

“O Allah, be merciful and kind toward my chief, my reliance, my shaykh, the place of the spirit in my body, the provision of my today and tomorrow, and Our Master [Mawlânâ], the Glory [Jalâl] of the Truth [ul-Haqq] and the Religion [ud-Dîn]! Guruma Anandmurti’s Commentary on Hu

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4I60ZHdx5Og

The passage below by Guruma Anandmurti captured our attention, as it flawlessly explains the experience of Qudra Healing and a million other seekers who can relate to the effect of the perfect mirror, the twin soul, the Shams e Tabrez persona who becomes the means of breaking, rebirth and yearning for the Divine. Hence, we dedicate this post to the Shams e Tabrez personalities who can never be forgotten and unconditionally loved and have become the greatest teachers of Love for those who fell into their gaze.

The greatest teachers came without notice, taught without books the greatest lessons. Love was their language, grace was their method of delivery and they left without notice. They remain in our hearts, separate not from our being. Their tragic disappearance was only illusion. We are in essence One with whom we love. Thus we rephrase, this  ‘tragic disappearance’ was actually the greatest bounty leading to a process of total dissolving and realization that there exists only ONE in the realm of Love.

Introduction

This is a prescription of love which has been transcribed below for the benefit of all seekers. To maximize the benefit of this article, the following instructions are recommended on how to read this passage.

Instructions

  1. Sit in a comfortable place free of noise and distrubance
  2. Play Anandmurti’s  Hu video above
  3. While listening to the video above, read aloud the transcript below in unison with the video.
  4. Let the energy of your recital heal

Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi says, “The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you, don’t go back to sleep. You must ask for what you really want, don’t go back to sleep. People are going back and forth across the door sill. The door is round and open, don’t go back to sleep. I would love to kiss you. The price of kissing is your life. Now my loving is running towards my life shouting, what a bargain, let’s buy it!”

One has to be a seeker, but before becoming a seeker one has to become a lover. You cannot become a lover if you have filled of worldly attachments. World is here in front of us, to give us experiential knowledge, understanding that it is a changeable transient entity. Laugh, sing, dance, make love, have children, create houses, money and power. And yet, in a moment death snatches everything and  leaves you shivering and shaking in fear and ultimately drowing in unconsciousness.

It is not possible to taste the Divine wine of love, if you haven’t met a Shaikh; a mystic. One must become a ney, a reed flute. Once has to become empty, hollow, then all the poetry and all the music will come through you. This Divine Love occupies heart and mind and then all universe seems as if its just  the Beloved peeping to us. From behind the sun, behind the stars and moon, flowers and trees, man and woman, children and old. Once this Divine Love makes its roots in the heart, person gets overwhelmed, drenched in this beautiful experience, where the mind goes into the zone of silence. The whole universe then exhibits the Divine dance of love One who has surrendered to the Lord is called a sufi. The sufi sings the Zikr, “La ilaha illalahu” There is no reality but God, there is only God. Zikr has three parts. The first is the denial of everything visible. Second is the explosion into the individual and the third part is the out breathing of Divine presence: HU. Sufi sings Hu; that which is, that which was and that which will be.

World becomes nothing more than an image stitched with gold thread in the tapestry, just the playful edition. Drunk in love, the lover calls out in longingness to the one that resides in the heart, but still seems so far. Nobody wishes a heaven if the price is death. Nobody wishes for immortality, if the cost is death. But this is what love is; death!  But from this arises the resurrection of new you, pure virgin, loveful and now the calls of the heart get answered. Until the ego is alive, there is no possibility of love to happen. When darkness of ego is blown away with longings, urgency, search of the truth, this becomes possible. For Jalaluddin Rumi, it happened when Shams e Tabrezi arrived and stole his heart and mind. And then the love occupied this vacuum. Once someone asked Shams, whose head was full of ideas and desires, he said, “tell me about Divine mystery.” Shams said, “I cannot tell you the mystery. I can tell this mystery only to •someone in whom I can see myself. This mystery I will tell only to myself. I don’t see myself in you. I see someone else.”

I cannot tell you the mystery. I can tell this mystery only to someone in whom I can see myself. This mystery I will tell only to myself. I don’t see myself in you. I see someone else.”

The mind has to be emptied of all attachments, greed, passion darkness. And for this, the teacher; the Shaikh has to hit lovefuly until the mind is shattered. The existence of the Beloved cannot be proven physically, nor it is  a fantasy. This presence at best has been given many many names in different cultures, yet the presence remains nameless. You may call it Allah, Bharaman, Reality, Truth or any other word. Because that is what best mind can try to do; give the name to the nameless. The Shaikh is a mirror, a reminder of that presence, understanding of this mystery comes through the Shaikh and it transforms all the energies of the seeker. Rumi said, “I have phrases and whole pages memorized, but nothing can be told of love. You must wait until you begin to live the love. Be patient. But only patient.”

The journey which begins from love towards God a moment comes in this journey when finally the union happens all boundaries get dissolved. Then this I is no more  different from that. As Al Hallaj Mansoor cried out, Anal Haqq-“I am That”(Truth) and then total emptiness. I is no more. So who will call whom? Just a vast emptiness. Which is best described by Sufis as “HU”  That which exists. Hu means that which was, and will be. No word can ever contain the infinitude presence once the consciousness arises after this volcanic experience. On asking,  what happened to you? Sufi says, HU.

Among many themes, this passage beautifully explains the mysteries of the Shems Rumi Phenomena, the role of a mystical teacher, the secret of death through love and the expulsion of the I for the one who seeks Hu. The above transcript can be taken as a mantra prescription for awakening the sleeping heart, mind and soul.

Gaze down now to view the reflection
A peek at the height of love’s perfection
I see Me
You see You
We see Him
How could this be?
As in reality we only see ONE imagery!
We’ve unlocked the key to our own Mystery
Our Unity
The Truth WE see
Not Blasphemy

(QH)

*The  reflection which Shams refers to was reserved for Mevlana Jalauddin Rumi. Likewise, Rumi’s reflection and mirror was Shams e Tabrez.

Dance, Movement and the Spiritual Way

Desert Offering

Hu. Hayy. When we find ourselves inclined towards the act of motion, where a desire to simply allow source to flow through our being without interference from our separate self (ego), then know we are already in a state of spiritual dance. Then let down thy hair, let down thy hair and flow, let go, be free and spin, enrapture yourself in the sacred dance that has no rules! Find yourself moving ecstatically in motion; in trance, in the HU. Be in the HU, experience the HAYY in HU and subtly come back to earth.

Inhale, exhale: Hu,  Hayy…

Movement, whether this defines Tai Chi, Yoga, belly dance, ballet or tennis, the very fact remains that our bodies require physical movement to enable, enhance and allow Chi to flow  within, throughout and around us. A student of spirituality who fails to incorporate movement as part of their regimen, basically misses the point. Essence is kept hidden in movement. Quite commonly, we see in all spiritual orders and traditions that movement plays an integral role in the method of training administered to adherents. This may include chants coupled with dance or specified bodily movements which could vary from swaying, jumping, spinning or abstract movements with fluid energy flowing through the concerned limbs and extremities. Maintaining healthy spirituality requires us to break down the walls of resistance and return to the state of supple being; the natural disposition we came into this very abode with. The state of flow where Qudra-Chi flows with mastery within our inner being results in a happier, more grounded and unified adherent. The dervishes of the Mevlevi Order of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi perform the Sema Ceremony as an act of mirroring of the entire cosmos; a dance of cosmic love in order to connect with Love in the name of Love. The anti clock wise motion represents the universal phenomena of spin involving the macro; celestial bodies and micro, the atom. Through the ecstatic whirling ceremony, the Dervish representing the lover, ‘burns’ in Love scorching everything so that only Love (God) remains. “When fire burns in anguish to meet her beloved, all senses are diminished. She burns on cinders day and night and when fire achieves seclusion with fire, she turns to ash!” Hence, when our being is prepared, movement and dance results as second nature.

Not Two but One

Rumi drank
Shems drank
Both began to whirl
gradual and steady
speed altered
Spinning until all that existed vanished
Rumi and Shems spun in ecstasy
Drunk in love
The sema carried on the night through
Dawn exposed their frantic state
Both fused
Now only one
One body
One soul
One heart
Not two but ONE

Inspired by the Ascended Masters of Wisdom and Light, we present for the Global Community of Light Workers, The Hu Meditation.

Background

Mantras have an extraordinary importance like the “HU”, like other Mantras is  a “word of power”. Mantras are listened to or recited for many different purposes, as a means of achieving different states of consciousness, to create resonance with specific attributes of Divine Energy, and to manifest different qualities from resonating the chakras to embodying compassion

The Supreme Being has been called by various names in different languages, but the mystics have known him as Hu, the natural name, not man-made, the only name of the Nameless, which all nature constantly proclaims. The sound Hu is most sacred; the mystics call Ism-i Azam, the name of the Most High, for it is the origin and end of every sound as well as the background of each word. The word Hu is the spirit of all sounds and of all words, and is hidden within them all, as the spirit in the body. It does not belong to any language, but no language can help belonging to it. This alone is the true name of God, a name that no people and no religion can claim as their own. This word is not only uttered by human beings, but is repeated by animals and birds. All things and beings proclaim this name of the Lord, for every activity of life expresses distinctly or indistinctly this very sound. This is the word mentioned in the Bible as existing before the light came into being, ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.’

Just as many traditions believe that the “OM” is the original creative sound, there are traditions that believe that this energy may be attributed to another sound—the “HU”. In the Shabd Yoga traditions, including Master Path and Eckankar and in the mystical Islamic path of Sufi, the “HU” is considered to be the highest vibratory mantra that can be sounded. Chanting the “HU” is said to lead one to transcendence—to God realization and enlightenment.
“HU” is believed to be the universal name of God, which is present in every existing language. The “HU” sound has been described as many things from the buzzing of bees to the rushing of wind to the flute of God. It is said to be present in the words we speak, in the sounds of animals; that it is the wind in the trees, the rushing of waters, the roaring of waterfalls, the beat of the sea against a beach—that it is everywhere, in every plane. “The “HU” creates extraordinary energy for balance and clearing. Many believe it activates both the heart and the crown chakras. When sounded together in a large group, it is extremely powerful and transformative.” Jonathan Goldman

Visual Guided Meditation Script

Envision yourself in the Holy Lands (however you define it) You are in a vast open grassy field. Flowers of all kinds scattered in this field of Love and Harmony surround you. You are forming a circle with the world community. Each individual representing a country forming a grand circle. In the center of this circle, we have children, mothers, elderly, young and old seated representing every place on earth where injustice, tyranny, war, genocide, and every evil imaginable is taking place. They are seated and covered with a white blanket made of the finest wool. This shawl is transparent and radiates light. The Light envelopes everything in sight and beyond. Its breadth and rays disperse in all directions, into the Universe and beyond our Galaxy. This light comes from our heart; the secret chamber. This Light resides in each and every heart. We are projecting light and asking the Creator of Light, who is Light, to heal the world. We are healed in Love, Peace, Unity and Harmony and One with every single living and non living thing in this planet and beyond. We are Love. We are Light. We are One with Love. One with ALL. Huuuu

Holding hands, we are seated upon the grass and recite HU. We close our eyes, relax our entire being, smile and inhale HU. Exhale aloud HU. We are gently swaying back and forth, synchronistic with the winds and every blade of grass. We are ONE with wind, One with Nature. One with Hu. One with Love. We are Love.

We continue to chant and gently sway back and forth holding hands and come to a halt after feeling the Sacred Light reaching every place in need of healing.

Closing Prayer

May we be infused with the Light of HU. May our beings be saturated in the essence of HU. May we acquire Divine Grace by the Grace of HU. May we Love All of creation with the Divine Quality of Love from HU; who is Love. Ameen. Amen
